Photo District News heeft de buik vol van Visa
Daryl Lang, de gezaghebbende redacteur van het invloedrijke magazine voor fotojournalistiek Photo District News rekent op genadeloze wijze af met de organisatie van het festival Visa pour l'Image, en onderstreept mijn eerdere kanttekeningen dat veel fotografen die niet bij de kliek van de directeur Jean-François Leroy horen steeds vaker afhaken.
Lang hekelt de onveiligheid op staart in Perpignan, die in de kaart wordt gespeeld door het verplichte opzichtige polsbandje dat van iedere geaccrediteerde festivalbezoeker een herkenbare prooi maakt voor het plaatselijke geboefte. Hij ziet de zelfvoldane naar binnen gekeerde houding van festivaldirecteur Leroy en de kliek fotografen rondom hem als een doodlopende weg voor de fotojournalistiek:
Jean-François Leroy is responsible for the tone and editorial direction of the festival, but I worry that he may be leading photographers down a dangerous road, toward a place where photojournalism is isolated as a specialty product, divorced from the popular media. What good is this work if nobody sees it except people who already get the message?
Het dieptepunt voor velen (onder wie Daryl Lang en de NRC-vertegenwoordiging ter plaatse) was het afgelasten van de laatste projectieavond, waardoor de 15 minuten roem van velen (inclusief de Nederlandse fotojournalist Dirk-Jan Visser) letterlijk in het water viel:
Later Leroy handed out the night's Visa d'Or award in an impromptu presentation outside a restaurant. I honestly enjoyed being part of that emotional moment. But I felt disappointed that the presentation was held before a small clique, and hundreds of photo fans who had traveled far and paid money to attend the festival were excluded.
On Monday, the festival e-mailed out this message:
Dear friends,
Jean-François Leroy, Sylvie Grumbach and the whole Visa pour l’Image and 2e Bureau team Want to thank you for your understanding. Saturday night, we had to cancel the screening and the closing party for security reasons.The rain damaged some of the electrical wires and we decided to tak no risks for our technical team and for the audience.
You are Visa pour l’Image...
